Taming the hot flushes

As women head towards menopause, it is common to experience uncomfortable and unpredictable rapid rises in heat throughout their body, often called hot flushes. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, blood is an aspect of yin and yin is by nature nourishing, cooling, sedating calming and restorative. As women age, they progressively lose blood, which results in a yin deficiency. This is expressed through the yang (heat) recklessly rising and that creates a hot flush.

At Therapy Works our objective is to restore the blood, regroup the yin, calm the yang and soothe the heat. Our approach is predominantly herbal, as this level of deficiency requires internal medicine. There are several Chinese herbal, Ayurvedic and Western herbal treatments, which are very effective, providing a transition from regular periods, through peri-menopause and menopause.

It is important to remember that this transition is a natural event, and that it can be supported with herbs, to provide a stable path emotionally, temperature wise, sexually and without weight gain. It is a relief for many women to find an effective alternative to Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), which can have adverse side effects.
